Learning to Manage Your Anxiety

January 31, 2012

Anxiety and the UFE go hand-in-hand. You can be guaranteed you will feel some anxiety, which is good. Anxiety is motiving…  but too much can be demotivating with negative consequences.

So lets keep it motivating! Here are some very simple exercises to make sure you are keeping your anxiety in check.

1. Be positive! Always talk about the UFE in a positive light, whether you are talking about studying this summer or passing. Never use language that hints at not passing or being negative. For example, never say “if I pass the UFE”. You should always talk about “WHEN you pass the UFE”!

2. Talk about the UFE as though your are in the future and the UFE is in the past. What I mean by this is picture yourself in January 2013 saying things like “it feels so good to have passed the UFE!” or “I’m so excited that I have my CA!”

Staying positive and talking yourself up may feel a bit strange at first, but soon it will be natural. And it works! The first step to success is thinking about yourself as a success!

Why Did You Fail?

January 12, 2012

I know it sucks, but eventually we have to move on from feeling sorry for ourselves when we fail, and figure out what we’re going to do about it. In other words, we need to figure out: Why did you fail?

There’s always a reason, of course, and it’s never because you’re not capable of passing. It could be one thing, or it could be an array of many things, but either way we need to determine what the reason(s) is(are) and focus on them and improve them so that next year you pass.

Why did you fail? I.e. What’s your weakness?

Identifying your weakness is an important task, so don’t skip this step. Sit down and give yourself some time to brainstorm. Write down anything and everything that comes into your head, without stopping to think because this will get your thoughts flowing. Afterwards you can go back and pick out ones you think are valid, and then create an action plan for it. In my book “I Failed the UFE! Now What?” I discuss the importance of having strong specific weaknesses and action points, because if you’re too broad it’s impossible to improve. So determine your weakness(es), be specific, be honest (sometimes it’s embarrassing, but nobody’s looking!), and have a specific, detailed action plan.

Once you know your weaknesses and have an action plan for addressing them you will be able to improve them and pass the UFE!

The Holidays Are Here

December 13, 2011

The Holidays are here. Enjoy them!

Busy season is right around the corner, and after that it will be time to start studying again. So let yourself relax over the holidays because not only do you deserve it, you need it. You need to let the pressure from failing release, and although moving on and getting ready to write again doesn’t happen over night it will certainly help if you are surrounded by family and good food!

In the new year you can finish your planning, but for now just relax. You’ve had some time to process it, so now you can simply enjoy yourself over the holidays. Forget about the UFE for a few weeks and enjoy the sounds and smells of Christmas.

If you have any questions or if you are looking for a marker or a mentor, email me through my website at KaylaSwitzer.com. I LOVE hearing from you.

Back at Work. Blah.

December 5, 2011

Today’s the big day: Going back to work…Blah.

Do your best to stay busy because this will help of course. Treat yourself to a fancy coffee, and a delicious lunch, and try to smile when you can. It helps.

If there are successful experienced writers in your office reach out to them when you’re ready. I wasn’t ready the first day, but maybe you are. Sit down and chat with them, they’ll make time for you! It might feel better to talk to someone who will empathize and who can understand.

Good luck today, and if you need to chat please email me through my website at KaylaSwitzer.com. I would love to hear from you.

I’m so sorry that you failed the UFE

December 3, 2011

I am so sorry that you are here, reading this, and that you failed the UFE. I’ve been there. I know what it’s like, and it’s awful. Devastating. Annoying. Enraging. Terrifying. The list goes on…

Take some time to think about it and process it, because you do need some time. And then when you’re ready, there are a few things you can think about – this is what you can do when you’re ready:

1. Review and know your transcript! This is important. SO important. To pass, you need to know why you failed.

2. Think about whether you want to appeal and/or order your PAR (the deadline will be in the next few weeks!)

3. Identify your weaknesses.

4. STAY POSITIVE!

I go into more detail in my book “I Failed the UFE! Now What?” available on my website. And you can also email me through my website if you have any questions, concerns, or just want to vent at www.KaylaSwitzer.com

December 2nd is almost here

December 1, 2011

December 2nd is almost here. Finally. Two more sleeps.

The last few days are hard. People are going to be asking you how you feel, and there’s no avoiding that. It’s impossible to get away from, and hard to take, but just smile. I know you are freaking out, and it’s so terrifying waiting for results, but they are just trying to be friendly of course.

Don’t forget to stay busy, go to movies, run, cook dinner with friends, and have plans for Thursday night!!! If you need to talk, email me through my website at www.KaylaSwitzer.com

And email me with your results! I can’t wait to hear from you!

One Week

November 24, 2011

One week tomorrow you will finally get your results. I know the waiting is agonizing! In fact, I have heard from several students over the last couple weeks who are feeling really nervous about their results, running through the cases in their head, and terrified of the outcome. I know it’s hard, it really is. But you don’t know your results yet, so don’t let your thoughts run away from you to convince yourself you have failed. This last week is always hard, waiting until (finally) it’s Friday morning. So like I always say… keep yourself busy!

And if you have any questions or if you just need to chat, email me through my website at www.KaylaSwitzer.com.

Three More Weeks of Waiting

November 11, 2011

Three more weeks until UFE results… and it feels like an eternity.

To keep from obsessing about the time, and making it seem even longer, stay busy! This is a long weekend, which is supposed to be fun! So take advantage of it by staying active, going to movies, making dinner with friends – whatever it is will keep your mind off of the fact that you have three more weeks of waiting until the UFE results finally reveal your candidate number.

And stay positive. There’s no value in getting down on yourself at this point, so put a smile on that face. And if you have any questions or concerns, contact me through my website at www.KaylaSwitzer.com
